The inspiration of Hollerith
Named for an inventor history mostly forgot.
The team could not decide on a name. Because the first product dealt with education, they named the company after Herman Hollerith, whose name has been lost to many but whose inventions are felt every day.
1860
Herman Hollerith is born, February 29.
1884
His punched card tabulating machine is patented, marking the beginning of mechanized binary code and semiautomatic data processing.
1911
His company is amalgamated with several others to form the Computer-Tabulation-Recording Company.
1924
The company is renamed International Business Machines (IBM).
1929
Hollerith dies, November 17, regarded as a seminal figure in data processing.
Hollerith Technologies has no connection to the real Hollerith family; the name honors a (mostly) forgotten inventor in the tech space. Learn more about Herman Hollerith
